• Hi Todd,

I wonder if you are still around?

I run quite a few WordPress websites and on several of the older ones, I use your Responsive TwentyTen plugin which works really, really great.

Thank you for this little gem which helps to keep the old design running by adapting it smoothly to the smaller screen of modern mobile devices!

The only issue I encounter is a cosmetic one: I use a bunch of randomly changing header images and whenever a page is (re)loaded, another image is shown. The problem is that the Responsive TwentyTen plugin does not scale the header images, it only shows a part of it (approx the left 25%) and omits the rest. Which looks odd on many images that were not chosen with the possibility on mind that they might be trunctated.

    Example sites:

    https://verein.fuerthwiki.de/
    https://www.anderswohnen-nuernberg.de/
    https://www.gebaeudereinigung-rost.de/

The header images look great on big screens but mostly odd on smartphones. Would be great to see that fixed after so many years…

Hope you are doing well. All the best for the future!

  • @toddhalfpenny is not-so-responsive twenty-ten 😉; his GitHub repo was last updated 2010.

I forked his GitHub to https://github.com/skierpage/responsive-twentyten , and incorporated Mike Matera’s 2014 fixes from his blog. One of his fixes was “The header image didn’t automatically adjust to screen size”; I applied that CSS in the Firefox web inspector to your site and it fixed the header images in a narrow desktop browser window. So try my version of the plug-in and see if it works any better. If not you can file an issue in either GitHub repo and I’ll try to keep track of it.

Even with the responsive-twentyten plugin, the Twentyten theme works very badly in the Gutenberg editor. WordPress conceded that although they “update” old themes, they don’t really keep them functional. I put up with the glitches at edit time and hope the theme renders better at display time. I’m glad responsive-twentyten is still mostly working for you.

Thank you very much indeed for providing a perfect solution out of the blue! 🙂

I updated the plugin (studying the magic you implemented in style.css) and after clearing the browser cache, all of my three websites listed above now work perfectly with complete header images on all kind of devices. Horray!

BTW, I intentionally do not use the Gutenberg editor, so compatibility problems are no issue for me.

You might notice that I myself changed the font family used in the theme to sans-serif.

All of this together means that TwentyTen still is a decent looking theme that does not look outdated at all!

    Thanks again and best wishes,
    Ralph
