WordPress 6.9.3 Released with Security Fixes

WordPress 6.9.3 is now available. After the release of 6.9.2 (a security release), some sites showed empty or white pages on the front of the website due to themes using an unsupported method for loading template files. Updating is recommended to keep your site stable and secure.

Most WordPress plugins are insecure — even when they use nonce Using nonce doesn’t automatically make a plugin secure. This is something many plugin developers misunderstand. Nonce only checks intent, it does NOT check permission. That means: A request can be valid, but the user might still not be allowed to perform that action. This is where many plugins go wrong. Nonce should always be combined with: a) Proper capability checks. b) Clean validation and sanitization. Without current_user_can(), nonce alone gives a false sense of security. More importantly, a plugin might work fine. But one missing permission check can expose serious risks. Plugin security is not about using one function correctly. It’s about understanding how WordPress security actually works. There’s a difference between premature optimization and doing it the wrong way. Product: we need plugins. Now which one is premature optimization? Dev #1: ok, I’ll wrap it in security and access controls and build apis so we can mediate access and it won’t be able to screw us up. Dev #2: we need it fast so I’ll just load the code into the product #2 is Wordpress. Premature optimization? Or bad decisions? I doubt anyone expected Wordpress to work. But by that time everyone knew plugins could be a problem (activex and Mac system extensions). #1 takes time and thought #2 is fast but has caused decades of downstream issues. Which would you do?
