The Resident Evil Movie Understands Video Games Are Ridiculous, and That's Why It's Great

1 week, 3 days - Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie understands that video games are ridiculous, and that's why it's great.Video games are ridiculous. The Resident Evil series is a perfect example of this. One moment you’re running in terror away from a comically oversized trench-coated tank of a man in a tiny hat; the next, you’re messing around with electronic chess pieces in order to open a door. These are completely alien situations that, somehow, these games make us feel compelled to navigate through rational thought. This is what Zach Cregger understands about Capcom’s genre-defining series so well. His Resident Evil movie knows that this is all ridiculous, and so the film has its lead, Brian, progress through its 90-minute rollercoaster just as we would if we had a controller in our hands. It’s a fantastic translation of the sensation that playing a survival horror game grants us, never forgetting to include every piece of glorious nonsense that comes with it.

Capcom Was on Its Knees After Resident Evil 6

1 year, 6 months - Capcom was on its knees after Resident Evil 6, now Monster Hunter Wilds cements its golden era, here's how it did it. With Monster Hunter Wilds breaking records on Steam and the Resident Evil game series more popular than ever thanks to RE Village and a handful of stellar remakes such as Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 2, it’s almost as if Capcom is incapable of failure. But that wasn’t always the case. Less than a decade ago, after a string of critical and commercial flops, Capcom had lost its way and its audience. It was suffering from an identity crisis. Resident Evil, which established the survival horror genre, had lost its bite after RE4. Street Fighter was on the ropes after the poorly-received launch of Street Fighter 5. It could easily have been the critical end of Capcom and its much-loved video games. But a change in the way Capcom made its games, supported by a powerful new game engine, gave these much-loved games series a new lease of life. This kickstarted years of critical and financial success that catapulted Capcom back into the big league.
