Silk Flies
These beings are never named in-game but are called "Silk fly" or "Silkfly" in the game files.

Silk Flies are small, glowing flies that can be found throughout Pharloom.
Creation
Many Silk Flies were created in the Whiteward of the Citadel. Bugs of the Citadel who could no longer sing or had become too frail to serve were called upon to perform a "duty most sacred".[1] Silk Flies were then created from these individuals using an object known as a Silk Siphon.[Note 1] The siphon appears to be a creation of the Weavers, having the distinctive spikes seen in their architecture and sharing many other design elements with the Weavenests.
The bugs chosen to become Silk Flies were told the process was a sacred duty, and that they would become the light that would guide new pilgrims to the Citadel.[1] They were aware that they would serve beyond their shells, and that they would devote themselves to the Citadel eternally. Some of them were reluctant, wondering why they must serve and lamenting the pain. Some would beg for their voices to be remembered.[2] The bodies of these bugs were left in large piles that can be found to the left of the Silk Siphon.
Purpose
Silk Flies are used as a guiding light by the pilgrims journeying to the Citadel,[1] and are found in almost every lamp and light source seen in Pharloom. Many Silk Flies can also be found within the Mist, a strange maze-like area created from the Silk dregs and smog expelled from Exhaust Organ. These flies led Hornet through the region to the organ, where Phantom could be found. Lace has the ability to conduct Silk Flies, and upon being defeated in the Cradle three Silk Flies cluster around her body. A Silk Fly landing on Hornet's cage was what broke the rune containing her. Once Hornet makes her way up through the Moss Grotto, Silk Flies guide her upwards to Bone Bottom.
The jars beside the Silk Siphon, used to contain newly created Silk Flies, can also be seen scattered about Twelfth Architect's workshop. Almost every cogwork bug created by the Citadel's Architects is animated by Silk Flies, and these flies may be where their thoughts are written.[3][4] A Silk Fly will often be seen flying out of destroyed constructs, and many of the constructs express confusion about their current identity.[5] Silk Flies can be found around the bodies of the broken sentinels in the High Halls. Additionally, a Silk Fly can be seen resting on the body of Twelfth Architect itself after it shut down. Some larger constructs such as the Fourth Chorus contain many Silk Flies who all work together.[6]
