The Dungeon Crawler Carl series first started as a web serial on Royal Road before Matt Dinniman decided to self-publish on Amazon back in September 2020. Since then the DCC books have gone through a series of different releases on various platforms. As of the most recent book release, all eight of the books are available as an eBook, a hardcover, and an audiobook.
eBooks
Every Dungeon Crawler Carl book has first and foremost been released as an eBook. The initial release for every novel in the series is for the eBook version. In addition to being available to read for free via many libraries, you can also access all of the Kindle versions via a Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Hardcovers
A Parade of Horribles was the first book in the series to get a hardcover release at the same time as the eBook version came out. This is largely because the publishing rights for the series weren't purchased by Penguin Random House until 2024, which is the same year hardcover editions started getting released.

Paperbacks
Matt Dinniman self-published the first book as a paperback back in 2020, but it was the only novel in the series to get that treatment until 2025 when Penguin Random House started releasing copies with updated covers. The large print paperbacks are available for the first six books only, but smaller print editions started getting re-released at the end of 2025.

Audiobooks
The Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks are some of the most popular audiobooks available in 2026, but they started getting released after the first books. Matt Dinniman said in an interview with IGN that he was well into writing book four when the first audio came out. It wasn't until A Parade of Horribles that the audiobook was released at the same time as the Kindle version.

Graphic Novels
Matt Dinniman, in collaboration with Vault Comics, has also started to release the graphic novel adaptation of his story. There has only been one volume released so far, but more are on the way. There's also a Crocodile spin-off set to release sometime in 2027. The main graphic novel collects chapters of the popular Webtoon version of the story.
