Description
While testing a ticket in both WordPress Playground and a local development environment, I faced difficulty locating and adding the Performance Lab plugin.
Currently, officially maintained WordPress.org plugins do not appear with any priority in the Plugin Directory listings — for example, the *Performance Lab* plugin appears around the 5th position in search results.
To improve discoverability, I propose adding a new filter tag in the Plugin Directory’s filter bar specifically for plugins that are contributed to or maintained by official WordPress.org teams.
Current Filters
- Featured
- Popular
- Recommended
- Beta Testing
- Favorites
Proposed Enhancement
Add a new filter option, for example:
- Core Plugins (or Official WordPress Plugins)
This section would list plugins that:
- Are officially developed or maintained by WordPress.org contributors or teams.
- Serve as experimental or feature plugins that may later be merged into WordPress Core.
Benefits
- Improves visibility and accessibility of verified, high-quality plugins maintained by the WordPress project.
- Helps users quickly identify trusted, official plugins that adhere to WordPress coding standards and review processes.
- Encourages greater adoption, testing, and contribution to Core-related projects.
- Strengthens collaboration between plugin developers and Core contributors.
Example
The Performance Lab plugin is developed by the WordPress Performance Team, but it can be hard to locate since it appears lower in plugin listings.
Providing a dedicated filter would help surface such official plugins faster and encourage broader usage.
Expected Outcome
Adding a “Core Plugins” (or similar) filter will:
- Enhance discoverability of official WordPress.org-maintained plugins.
- Encourage community participation and testing.
- Promote usage of reliable, standards-compliant plugins developed under the same quality guidelines as WordPress Core.

I agree with @dd32 — the proposed "Core Plugins" filter appears to be redundant.
Existing options already allow users to discover officially maintained plugins, so adding a separate filter does not provide significant additional value and would introduce unnecessary maintenance overhead.
This ticket should be marked as wontfix.
Most plugins that would be needed, such as the Performance Lab plugin, are available via the Beta tab on trunk/playground, and in the case of Performance Lab in the Featured tab too.
