Michael Whatley (born 1968 or 1969)[1] is an American politician and lawyer. He was the chair of the Republican National Committee from March 2024 until August 2025. He was chair of the North Carolina Republican Party from 2019 to 2024.
After the United States Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, Whatley refused to blame former President Donald Trump and only blamed the people who took part of the attack.[2]
Whatley is the Republican nominee for the United States Senate in the 2026 election in North Carolina.
2026 U.S. Senate campaign
[change | change source]In July 2025, Whatley announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina in the 2026 election.[3] His campaign has been supported by President Donald Trump.[4] He resigned from the RNC in August 2025.[5]
In March 2026, Whatley won the Republican nomination and will face-off against former Governor Roy Cooper in the general election.[6]
