Organize watchlist

[edit]

Since yesterday occurs a popup named Organize watchlist , when adding or removing items to and from the watchlist. Please show a way, how to get rid off this thing. Only 1 click is wanted!no explanation is there for Watchlist labels. No way shown for getting back to the old behavior, wrong link to remove this feature.Florentyna (talk) 14:35, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I noticed this too. It is incredibly frustrating and extra cumbersome to have to click at least twice (plus an additional cursor drag) to do common actions that previously required only a single click. Looks like someone tried to solve a problem that doesn't need fixing, and only created more problems. -Animalparty (talk) 18:48, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can understand that this change is frustrating for some users, but personally I've been eagerly awaiting this feature. Previously there wasn't an easy way to assign a watchlist label after adding something to the watchlist, but now it's super easy. Yirba (talk) 07:55, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
looks like this has been deployed across Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia and Commons. Surely there can be a way to allow the option to sort and label watchlists without adding multiple cumbersome steps to the initial watch/unwatch action. Yes, it's less cumbersome on a mobile phone than a laptop (I use both), but it seems like creeping enshittification. -Animalparty (talk) 22:15, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
There is simply needed an option in the preferences, to enable or disable this feature. No idea, how many people using the watchlist label (I never). When adding things to the watchlist, one can ignore the flyout - removing is more frustrating (especially on phones): Instead of click, now click scroll click (click). --Florentyna (talk) 07:49, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Right. I never use it either. Should be OPT-IN. - Erik Baas (talk) 11:33, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Seems to be back in the old behvior. --Florentyna (talk) 18:45, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Looking for feedback on OpenHistory.app — interactive map of historical events and territories

[edit]

Hi all — first-time poster, first Wikidata project.

I just launched OpenHistory, an interactive atlas that pulls historical events, locations, and polities from Wikidata via SPARQL and lays them on a timeline + map, with territory labels and polygons from OpenHistoricalMap underneath. Code is MIT.

I'm finding it most useful for is spotting and fixing data gaps. Plenty of historical events have no location (P276) or coordinates, and many polities are missing start time (P580)/end time (P582). When you put them on a map and timeline, the holes become obvious, making it easy to correct. There's also a side panel listing every event in the current window with no location. You can click into Wikipedia/Wikidata in-app and fix the missing values, which submits straight to Wikidata via OAuth.

A few examples of contributions in the last few weeks, all done via the in-app edit flow:

Would love community input:

  • Similar projects I should know about? I'm aware of Histropedia, but it's just a timeline. Anything similar?
  • Feedback on the application Please let me know if you have any suggestions or changes to ensure the best experience and highest quality data suggestions.

Pipeline coverage right now: ~21,700 events (601 BCE – 2025 CE), ~9,800 polities. Source on GitHub: https://github.com/kdhillon/openhistory

A huge thank-you to everyone whose contributions ended up in this dataset — both Wikidata editors and the OpenHistoricalMap mappers whose territory polygons I'm rendering on top. Kyled321 (talk) 04:39, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

My warlike.info is similar, presenting military history Wikidata in a more attractive form, with timelines, maps and galleries, though while every page links to wikidata, it does not focus on missing data like yours. I'll provide more detailed feedback on your talk page, but it looks good, and perhaps should operate in 2 modes, one for those browsing who don't want to edit, and another for editors where omissions are the focus. I found dynamic filters were very useful for thinning data volumes on a page. Vicarage (talk) 05:49, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Dates on gadget quickpreset

[edit]

Hello Hello I'm a contributor on French Wikipedia. I mostly patrol newly created articles in order to link them to their wikidata items or to create the item if it doesn't already exist. To help me, I've put in place the quickpreset gadget, which allows me to quickly fill informations (for instance for a human : occupation, place of birth/death, image, etc). However, it looks like dates (for time of birth and death) use a different format and I can't make these properties work through my quickgadget (here is the code). Does anyone know if there is a workaround ? Thank you in advance ! TTSolitaire (talk) 15:56, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Royal Horticultural Society website updated

[edit]

The Royal Horticultural Society (Q1032739) website seems to have been updated with many new entries. At some point the property Royal Horticultural Society plant ID (P8765) was populated from their website's API(?) data. Could another run be made to get the updated plant IDs onto Wikidata? Interesting – is there a way to reliably match an RHS plant ID to a Wikidata item? Otherwise I think it's not really possible to import them. Yirba (talk) 06:18, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Days 2026: Online Wikidata community gathering (Friday to Sunday, June 19 - 21)

[edit]

Hello everyone,

I'm excited to announce that we're preparing the next Wikidata community gathering: the WikiProject Days 2026. The event will take place online, from June 19 to 21, 2026 (Friday to Sunday).

Topic and goals

WikiProjects are a crucial part of data quality work on Wikidata. They help newbies find their place and connect with others, and they inform data modelling and quality decisions.

During this event, we want to:

  • Increase / encourage more editors to use WikiProjects as a space to connect with others and inform data modelling and quality decisions.
  • Bring life back into neglected WikiProjects to make them more helpful spaces.
  • Create guidelines of what is necessary for a good WikiProject.
  • Get feedback on how to bring visibility to WikiProjects from the development side

Format and Registration

The event will be fully online and coordinated by Wikimedia Deutschland. Sessions will include a mix of talks, workshops, discussions, and of course games.

You can already register on the event page: WikiProjects Days 2026 (click on the "Register” tab). The event is open to everyone, regardless of experience level. Sessions will be recorded and shared afterwards.

Propose a session (CFP)

Do you have a talk, workshop, or discussion in mind? We want to hear from you.

We are looking for sessions that create space for discussions and improvement around the WikiProjects: whether it's sharing your experience with a specific WikiProject, facilitating a discussion on what makes a good WikiProject, running a workshop on how to start one, on how to bring life back into a neglected WikiProject and make it more useful again, facilitating a discussion on how to use WikiProjects as a space to connect with others and inform data modelling and quality decisions, or something completely different you think is useful.

Follow the discussion

We will post updates on our usual communication channels and on the event's talk page. To stay informed, add the page to your watchlist. For any questions or ideas, feel free to reach out to me directly.

Looking forward to seeing you at the WikiProject Days \o/

Books help - how to list directories?

[edit]

I know that books need two Wikidata entries - the book itself (written work (Q47461344)) and each edition (version, edition or translation (Q3331189)) (from Help:Sources). This makes sense when you have a book that has many different versions, translations, publishers etc. However I'm adding a number of directories as I'm using them as references. Should the 2026 version of a directory be a written work or an edition? I've followed the info on help sources and made Diocese of East Anglia Yearbook & Calendar 2026 (Q139591965) as a written work and then Diocese of East Anglia Yearbook & Calendar 2026 (1st edition) (Q139591981) as an edition. This feels odd. Should the written work be a generic Diocese of East Anglia Yearbook & Calendar, and then each year be an edition? This would allow us to use edition as used in these books. This yearbook (Diocese of Leeds Yearbook 2026 (Q137707398)) is the 100th edition, as it has been published every year since 1927. In our schema I made Diocese of Leeds Yearbook 2026 (1st edition) (Q139623100) but there will never be a second edition of the 2026 handbook as they don't work like that. Also, I think we need a better way of listing help as it's buried, our help is only basic stuff. Secretlondon (talk) 17:26, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Could you not just use a year qualifier and the generic title of the work as your reference. I certainly think you should create "Diocese of Leeds Yearbook" before you create 100 editions of it. Vicarage (talk) 22:56, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Q110281105

[edit]

Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place. To my knowledge, I've never edited here except to occasionally update some wikidata items. The Wikidata entry Q110281105 was made about 4 1/2 years ago. It references an individual from South Africa. This person has tried for years to get an article about themselves on en.wikipedia creating dozens of sockpuppets in an attempt to do so; see w:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Bmusique99. Their various attempts in draft, sandboxes, and mainspace have been deleted dozens of times. The problem is that this wikidata item being in existence is prompting a bot to add it to the list w:Wikipedia:WikiProject AfroCreatives/Missing articles by country/South Africa. Given the various AfDs (examples: 1, 2), the creation of a new article for this person is highly unlikely to succeed. It's presence as a wikidata item populating the missing articles list creates a false impression that this article would be accepted. I'm requesting this wikidata item be deleted due to this issue. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:45, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The correct venue for requesting deletion is WD:RFD.
This item has two references and six identifiers, not all of which are social media. It appears to satisfy our notability criteria, albeit barely. The original creator was a single-purpose account.
While you have my sympathy, the mechanism chosen to populating a missing article list on another project is not a valid reason to delete a Wikidata item. Bovlb (talk) 04:10, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
We aren't two alien worlds in different star systems. We are under the umbrella of the Wikimedia Foundation. This project is in essence enabling a long time abuser to achieve what they want to achieve. Simply washing your collective hands of the issue because it's compliant here is wrong. If that's the stance of this particular project, my faith in it is gone. Please don't construe this as a threat, but given this stance I have to wonder the validity of including wikidata connections on en.wikipedia now. If such junk is allowed to persist, then connecting anything on wikidata to en.wikipedia undermines that project. Seriously disappointed. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:39, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, this is not the only case where a long-term abuser has achieved an item that complies with our notability policy. You're welcome to file an RFD and make the argument. You're also welcome to propose a change to project policy. Bovlb (talk) 14:15, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please avoid such hyperbole. It does nothing to advance your argument and is contrary to the spirit and purpose of both Wikidata and Wikipedia. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:25, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I will speak as I find fit, and it's not hyperbolic. This is trash, and this project is hiding behind bureaucracy to keep it and in the process is enabling a LTA. It's absurd. --Hammersoft (talk) 02:41, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
If "missing" means in Wikidata but not in Wikipedia there are always going to be some, as notability here is sometimes based on structural need (typically statements in items that are notable for Wikipedia in some language but not necessarily English, or authors in scholarly article (Q13442814) items). Notability here is still unclear, the identifiers are all Wikidata property for an identifier that does not imply notability (Q62589320) and only one of the references (an article in Daily Voice (Q5209386)) is a source that contributes to notability. Request to split NOW Entertainment (Q124460670) — improper merge of two distinct entities

[edit]

On April 28, editor Granpar merged Never Off Work Entertainment, LLC (Q139557435) (Never Off Work Entertainment, LLC — a registered LLC) into NOW Entertainment (Q124460670) (NOW Entertainment — a music label). These are two legally distinct entities with different legal forms, purposes, and Wikidata properties. The merge created a self-referencing owned by statement and removed several valid claims. I contacted Granpar directly and they confirmed the edit cannot be self-reverted as further edits were made on top of it. I am the owner/creator of both entities and can verify they are distinct. Requesting admin assistance to split NOW Entertainment (Q124460670) and restore Never Off Work Entertainment, LLC (Q139557435) as a standalone item. Thank you. adding dates in different calendars

[edit]

Is there a canonical way to add a date (e.g., death date, birth date) in a calendar that is not Gregorian or Julian? If so, the https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Dates page should probably explain how to do that.

For example, hijrī (Islamic) years are lunar years, so a single hijrī year usually straddles two Gregorian/Julian years.

Scenarios:

  • how should a birth date for which the full hijrī date (year-month-day) is known be added?
  • How should a death date for which only the hijrī year is known be added? NB: every hijri year has its own wikidata item (e.g., 574 AH = https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6026299), which states its start and end day in the julian/gregorian calendar.

Merging brands of a company into the company itself

[edit]

The oil company Shell uses several brands for its petrol stations. One of these is Shell Express. The Openstreetmap project uses the Wikidata items of these kind of brands in its tagging.

The brand Shell Express keeps getting merged into the main company. The only reason given is 'It's a sign, it doesn't need a Wikidata item.' This seems to violate Help:Merge, where it's said that items that are the same should be merged. When this user thinks an item isn't notable for Wikidata, I removal request should be made. Although I think a petrol station brand with over 1000 stations is very notable.

These merges cause errors in Opensteetmap and seem to violate Wikidata policy. How do I prevent them from happening? The current reverts of the merges just takes up unnecessary work. A67-A67 (talk) 09:30, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I agree that in many cases it is better to have a separate item for a brand rather than trying to include everything in the company item (which then often becomes overloaded). A brand can have its own properties (typically social media accounts) and may be used by multiple entities in different countries. In such cases, a separate item is definitely appropriate. In this particular case, it is more suitable to have a separate item for the brand in question. Note that questions related to companies can be discussed at Wikidata talk:WikiProject Companies. Jklamo (talk) 14:10, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
different from (P1889) can be used to indicate that two items represent different concepts and should not be merged. I've applied it to Shell (Q154950). Hopefully it helps. Yirba (talk) 15:41, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Correct usage of multilingual names for companies

[edit]

In this edit multilingual labels (mul) are removed. Despite these edits have been reverted, the removal continues.

The only reasoning given is that the multilingual names aren't needed when all languages are filled in. This reasoning has two weaknesses. First not all possible languages on Wikidata will be filled in. The multilingual labels have been invented to make a label possible for each language. Secondly the page Help:Default values for labels and aliases lists names as one of the usecases of multilingual names.

Should a company have the multilingual label and aliases field filled in? A67-A67 (talk) 09:38, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Both of these are edit wars between you and User:Paranoid25. What happened? Secretlondon (talk) 12:01, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Company names are proper nouns that are valid across Latin languages, so are certainly candidates for mul. All these mul edit wars have just boosted the database size, rather than reduced it as planned. Vicarage (talk) 12:48, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would agree. By analogy with people: if a company name (as registered) is in the Latin script, it is an good use of the mul label. It would be good to extend WD:MUL to organizations if there is consensus. Best NGOgo (WikiProject Nonprofits) 16:09, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Only if they actually have the name in all languages. There are, however, plenty of companies that have names in multiple languages, even within the same country because not every country is monolingual. We've already had multiple problems with mul being used for places in countries where multiple languages are spoken, let's not perpetuate it for company names too. - Yupik (talk) 19:51, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's a fundamental misunderstanding of how mul is meant to work. Its to provide a backstop, there is no problem doing local variants, but allows you to avoid 50 identical values together with those 5 variants. And as its done by language, the country is not an issue. Vicarage (talk) 19:55, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree, if companies have multiple official names in use and in the official register, which is the case in some countries. In those cases chosing one language over the other as backstop could be an unfair choice. But even in most multilingual countries the companies have a main name (i.e. in Belgium, Switzerland or Canada, where it depends on the region).
Anyway, a case like TotalEnergies (Q154037) with +60 times the name "TotalEnergies" is a posterchild for the use of mul. Best NGOgo (WikiProject Nonprofits) 20:47, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to WD:MUL "Wikidata uses these default values for labels or aliases where no other value is given (see screenshot)" Paranoid25 (talk) 13:11, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Which means that if here is no English label then mul is used; the same for any other language and as there are languages with Latin script with no label in that item, mul is better than nothing and it's better to use mul instead of copying it to every language. Even if there had been a good reason to remove mul, rollback[2] should not have been used: according to Wikidata:Rollbackers it is "not be used to undo good-faith contributions". Peter James (talk) 17:33, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I feel like the guidance on use of "mul" is too ambiguous currently, leading to inconsistency in use. I'm not even entirely sure I'm using it correctly. Would be good to draw up more concrete principles and examples that we can all align with. Yirba (talk) 15:46, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The item was created in 2021 by User:Marcok via the Mix'n'Match entry for FAST ID (P2163) value 1625379.

The other identifiers linked to the item variously relate to a person active in the 19th century, and a 1991 comic book artist; and some of them seem to conflate multiple individuals (VIAF, for example, lists "AI in manufacturing start-ups, 1986" and "actif en 1871".

How should we proceed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:47, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2005015459.html looks like it was intended to be the author of "AI in manufacturing start-ups" but other unrelated works and a conflation ISNI were added, and the FAST ID is connected to nb2005015459 and VIAF 107981307, which was originally intended to be the same person but is now a conflation. The "actif en 1871" is from https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb16130564d which is also https://viaf.org/en/viaf/11163753773834272913 (and https://viaf.org/en/viaf/18774567 for the pseudonym Heraclitus Grey). please add commons Category:Eudicots on Eudicots (Q165468)

[edit]

item is locked. is there anyother more precise place for this kind of requests ? please add Category:Eudicots (commons category) কল্কি (talk) 01:01, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It has Commons category (P373) eudicots already. Secretlondon (talk) 12:27, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Secretlondon it was not in sitelinks, sorry. কল্কি (talk) 13:57, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
There is a separate item for the category (Category:Eudicots (Q7328661)) so the Commons category is in sitelinks there. Peter James (talk) 22:07, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello everyone,

I'd like to share a tool I've been building: GapMap.wiki — a free, open-source index of knowledge gaps between Wikipedias, powered entirely by Wikidata.

What it does: You pick a source Wikipedia (e.g. English) and a target Wikipedia (e.g. Italian). GapMap shows you all the articles that exist in the source but are missing in the target, ranked by how many other Wikipedias already have them. If 50 languages have an article and yours doesn't, that's a significant gap.

How it uses Wikidata: The system periodically downloads the wb_items_per_site table from the Wikidata dumps. For each item, it counts the number of sitelinks and checks which wikis are present or absent. No SPARQL endpoint is hit at runtime — everything is pre-indexed locally. The data refreshes every ~3 days.

Example: Right now, there are over 6,000 Wikidata items with 30+ sitelinks that have an English Wikipedia article but no Italian one. Many of these are well-established topics that could benefit readers in the target language.

What I'm looking for:

  • Feedback on whether this is useful for the editing community
  • Suggestions on additional signals I could pull from Wikidata (e.g. instance-of / subclass-of for topic filtering)
  • Any concerns about how the tool uses Wikidata data

The project is open source: GitHub. The methodology is transparent — no black boxes, just cross-referencing public sitelink data.

I'm happy to answer any questions. Thanks for your time!

Nice work! Seems like not just a good way to identify 'missing' articles, but also a way to identify missing interwiki links on Wikidata to Wikipedia articles that already exist.
That said, if I do Japanese (ja) to English (en), I see two main issues: Firstly, most of the entries are in the Module namespace. It would be good to (be able to) filter to just the main namespace. Secondly, the links to the English Wikipedia uses the Japanese name. If I'm creating an article on the English Wikipedia, it needs to have an English title. So it should probably use the English label if it exists. Yirba (talk) 16:16, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Lexemes with language Standard Chinese (Q727694)

[edit]

I noticed on Ordia that Standard Chinese (Q727694) is the language with the most Chinese lexemes. However, Standard Chinese (Q727694) does not have a language code. Should they be changed to Chinese (Q7850)? Sun8908 💬 10:46, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Wikifunctions actively utilizes Wikidata items and lexemes. However, the "What Links Here" tool currently does not reflect this usage. For instance, the lexeme jour de la semaine (L1565447) is used in the Wikifunctions test case dimanche est un jour de la semaine, but this connection is missing from the associated WhatLinksHere page.

Is it possible to integrate Wikifunctions and Abstract Wikipedia into the global usage and "What Links Here" tracking for Wikidata? John Samuel (talk) 16:05, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Translation personal profile

[edit]

I would like to add an english version of personal profile but I am no eligible for it, so how to solve this problem? Miraliyon (talk) 07:46, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand - you mean a user page? You have a user page if you work on the project - if you do not edit on the English wikipedia you won't have a user page there. It is not for advertising yourself. Secretlondon (talk) 10:12, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It is not advertising it is for suppose of correction and practice
For example I have article in Russan and Tajik language and now I want to translate and publishe it into English.
I hope there is no any misunderstanding. Miraliyon (talk) 11:35, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, to be clear: we strongly discourage writing articles about yourself on Wikipedia, Wikidata or any other Wikimedia project. You can create a user page but it should relate to your activities on Wikimedia, not an article. Yirba (talk) 14:20, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mix'n'Match scraper wizard

[edit]

I have read the documentation for the above and am still bemused. Is there anyone who would have the time to kindly walk me through setting up a scraper, or are there any online videos? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:45, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Access the wikicode of wikidata

[edit]

Hello, I would like to remove all the labels from Q3109769 since it is not a disambiguation page (there was an error on fr-WP and was wrongly categorized as such). Do I have to remove everything by hand or can I access some kind of wikicode behind the element to remove everything at once ? Thank you, TTSolitaire (talk) 17:11, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think it's better to move the link to a new item and have this one deleted (WD:RFD). But to answer your question, this is best done using the beta version of labelLister or by restoring the initial revision and re-adding useful stuff (if any). --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 18:03, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I've restored the initial version and fixed it ! But I'm still wondering if there is a way to access and edit the wikicode behind the element ? TTSolitaire (talk) 18:17, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The "wikicode behind the element" is json I believe. It's only editable directly via API's, not in the UI as far as I know. ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:29, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Return to IP editing

[edit]

Can we ask WMF to return to IP editing, instead of temporary accounts? If not, why? Please explain in your own words. ~2026-27830-15 (talk) 18:27, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

You can ask; they will not do so, for reasons already explained at length in their announemnts of the change. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:47, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's not going to happen. But perhaps there are things that can be done to better combat abuse from temporary accounts (assuming that's the reason why you'd like to return to IP addresses). Yirba (talk) 20:55, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Event Organizers (policy vote)

[edit]

Not a single mention in the Event Organizer policy about notability, knowing it themselves and teaching event participants about it. Wasn't this a major reason why this permission had to be be requested in the first place? Let's throw a vote to put that in there, prominently. Infrastruktur (talk) 07:34, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think you can be bold and add it as a recommendation without requiring a vote. (And if we should have a vote, wouldn't a RfC with proposed changes to the text be the proper way about it?) Ainali (talk) 08:34, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
