Mount Fay

Mount Fay is an area in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Mount Fay is a mountain with near vertical cliffs to the east and slopes to the west. Mount Fay is a cold and icy area accessible only via the Slab.
Description

Mount Fay is nearly devoid of enemies to fight, and consists almost entirely of platforming challenges, requiring both Clawline and Drifter's Cloak to traverse.
While in Mount Fay, Hornet slowly frosts from the cold when not near a heat source, indicated by Hornet's sprite flashing light blue, the edges of the screen getting increasingly coated in ice, and the Masks in her healthbar turning blue and quivering. Safely traversing the area requires quickly moving between heat sources which are scattered around the area. Hornet normally takes 15 seconds to fully frost over, but certain effects can slow this:
- Being in contact with a Pimpillo explosion will immediately reverse the timer by [Missing information]%, and will slow the timer by [Missing information]%.
- Using Flintslate will immediately reverse the timer by [Missing information]%, and will slow the timer by 30% while its effect is active.
- Entering Beast Crest's Fury state will immediately reverse the timer by 15%, and will slow the timer by 10% while in the Fury state.[Source 1]
- Combining both effects gives a 37% slowdown.
Once fully frosted, Hornet takes
of damage every 1.75 seconds. Damage cannot be slowed once it begins, but frosting can still be reversed, stopping damage until Hornet is fully frosted again. [Source 1]
Hornet starts flashing blue to indicate that she is about to take frost damage. The first blue flash indicates that the timer has started, and after 10 flashes, the frost effect begins.
The waters in Mount Fay are also freezing, and will immediately deal
of damage when Hornet lands in them, and an additional
every [Missing information] seconds she remains in the water. This damage cannot be slowed or reduced, and does not affect the progress of Hornet frosting over from the ambient cold.[Missing information]
At the top of Mount Fay, Hornet unlocks the Faydown Cloak, which grants her immunity to frostbite from its cold weather. However, icy water remains damaging.
The Ascendant's Grip, Weavelight and Plasmium Phial Tools can make the trek easier, though they aren't required. Caution should be exercised with certain heat sources, as they are destructible and can render certain sections impassable without resetting.
The Mask Maker's home can be found on a side path off of the western slopes, accessible after obtaining the Faydown Cloak.
History
Mount Fay was likely a natural formation in Pharloom existing long before the Citadel. The Weavers built passages and a tuning fork into the mountain for the purpose of communing with the Fayforn,[1] a large winged creature at the mountain's peak. The Weavers also constructed a small Weavenest at the top of the mountain and used it to build tools.[2] Weavers were challenged to make the difficult climb to the top, though hailing the Fayforn was dangerous, as she could equally grant insight or death.[3]
Other structures can be seen on the western side of the mountain slope, including a Bench surrounded by bells similar to many built by the Citadel. There is also a contraption resembling an old gondola, though its true purpose is unknown.
How to Access
Mount Fay is west of the Slab, accessible from the west side of its Bellway. The Clawline is needed to access it.

Sub-area: Brightvein
Brightvein is a bright, icy cave inside Mount Fay. It is accessed by going south and west from the south-eastern Bench, then using Silk Soar on a rock floating in the ice water in the room to the west of the large chasm. While in Brightvein, Hornet can do a platforming challenge by bouncing off Mnemonord enemies to obtain a Mask Shard.

Creation and Development
- Main article: Cut Content (Silksong)/Areas#Mount Fay

Mount Fay rooms were first created around Jaunary 2020. Upon its conception on the map, it connected to the Red Coral Gorge and had a large crystalline room in its south end until around September 2021. The area also featured a Bellway within the large western toll bench structure. It remained relatively unchanged up until around May 2022, after which its interior rooms were entirely overhauled: notable changes being the Bellway and its structure getting removed, and the Brightvein being introduced, as it was part of the main area formerly. Notably, prior to the rework, Mount Fay's interior rooms were far more jagged and twisting; lacking the straight Weaver-made tunnels seen in the final game.
Evidence suggests that a functioning Weavenest named Weavenest Askar was planned for the area at some point, which may have been replaced by the current broken-down Silkshot Weavenest. A disabled Weavenest door can be found in the room containing the lore tablet at the base of the mountain.
Mount Fay was first showcased to the public in the April 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct sizzle reel Silksong clip, around eight months before release, making it one of the last areas to be revealed pre-release. The clip contained Hornet sliding down a slope, additionally revealing the sliding mechanic for the first time.[4]

Trivia

- The toll bench in this area produces a unique sound when its bells are rung, resembling sleigh bells.
- Despite only being normally accessible after receiving the Faydown Cloak, the Wispfire Lantern tool lowers frosting rate by 20% while equipped. Stacking this with the effects of Flintslate and the fury state would slow the frosting rate down by almost a half. Because Faydown Cloak completely shields Hornet from the effect, this cannot be noticed in a normal game.
- Dying to frost damage will trigger a unique death animation where Hornet is slowly covered by ice crystals which then shatter, leaving behind a single crystal in the shape of Hornet.
- While sliding down a slope, pressing LEFT or RIGHT will cause Hornet to speed up or slow down her descent, depending on the direction of movement. She will lean in whichever direction is being held.
