Mortal Shell 2: Outskirts Of Mammon walkthrough (Part 17)
How to perfectly set off your journey into the south
As you may have discovered if you dipped your toes into the lands to the south after completing the Prologue of Mortal Shell 2, the Outskirts Of Mammon are no joke. Mammon, as a land, is scaled considerably higher than the Fainweald you've grown accustomed to so far.
But now we've reached the point in your playthrough where Mammon is your next goal. There's quite a bit to discover even in the first gateway region, but I'll carefully guide you through every single bit of it, collecting every valuable material, killing every enemy, and completing every activity along the way. Keep reading for our full Outskirts Of Mammon walkthrough, broken into 13 easy-to-digest steps!

1. Clear out the Crumbling Tunnel.
Fast Travel to the starting Outskirts Of Mammon Beacon, either using Mether's Breath or via the top of the Marrow Keep tower. The Beacon is already activated, so rest at it and then enter it to reach (a section of) the Crumbling Tunnel.
This "dungeon" is just one room. Head through into the tunnel and you'll find a subterranean pond, guarded by a lone Tarred Vestige. Kill the Vestige and loot the front of the giant statue behind it for a Glimpse. Then return out into the overworld.
2. Conquer the Smuggler's Hideout.
Back at the Beacon, head behind it and to the right slightly, where you'll see a catapult overlooking the region. Next to the catapult is a Ventrium.
Now return to the Beacon and head to the right, down the slope. There are two camps: the left-hand one is guarded by three Brigands, while the right-hand camp is guarded by one Brigand and one Armed Knave.
These Brigands are tough, like the ones in the Desolate Keep. This is the new norm, I'm afraid. They're not easily staggered, so take your time with them or they'll really punish you.
Watch where you step around the camps, too, because there are bear traps on the ground!
Clear the left-hand camp, and loot the Common Moonshine behind the back of the far tent. Go down the slope to the left of the tree, and loot the 3x Weltcaps at the base of the next tree, before returning to the camp.
Now kill the Armed Knave and Brigand at the other campsite, and loot the Common Moonshine and the 100x Coin Pouch by the boxes. You'll see a dungeon entrance next to this camp; enter it to reach the Smuggler's Hideout.
Two Brigands and another Armed Knave greet you around the first corner. Kill them and loot the 200x Coin Pouch by the waterfall.
Head through the waterfall and kill the Knave beyond. Destroy the crates at the far end of the room, and collect the 2x Ventrium they drop. Then open the chest in the room for a Coin Of Mammon before returning the way you came.
On the way back, you'll be ambushed by another Brigand and a Stoner. Stoners, too, are more challenging in the land of Mammon than they were in Fainweald. These Stoners are more aggressive and throw multiple rocks in quick succession. They're still not too horrific to face though.
Finish up with them and exit the dungeon.
3. Obtain the Map Of Mammon [5].
Outside, head down the slope ahead of you and to your right, next to the first camp. Cross the bridge ahead, and you'll see Ruk by one of his map statues to your left.
Kill the two Brigands guarding Ruk, and collect the Map Of Mammon [5] from the statue. Because this is your first Mammon map, it will also reveal the locations of the next three Corrupted Gates containing Mammon's three legacy dungeons and major bosses.
4. Clear the area around Ruk.
Collect the 2x Weltcaps behind Ruk's statue. Then go up to the catapult to the left of the statue, and you'll see that you can interact with it - but you need a "Makeshift Projectile" first. Remember this catapult; we'll come back later.
Make your way down either of the slopes to the lower level behind Ruk's statue, and kill the various Tarblighted Miners working here. On the far left, around the corner, there's also a lone Brigand that needs killing.
With the area cleared, you'll see that there are two Bone Gates leading to different areas. The first Bone Gate is just behind where the Miners were. The second is found by crossing the bridge just behind Ruk's statue. Go to this second one. Don't use it, just loot the Laterite next to it and then return.
The Outskirts Of Mammon is absolutely riddled with Bone Gates leading to different areas, and it can get confusing and overwhelming very quickly if you use them. For now, we'll ignore every Bone Gate we come across - these two included. So head back now to the Outskirts Of Mammon Beacon and rest if needed.
5. Complete the Corrupted Statue Trial.
Back at the Beacon, there's another camp at your 7 o'clock. Kill the three Brigands there (again, watch for bear traps), and loot their Common Moonshine. There's also a 100x Coin Pouch on one of the boxes nearby.
Now follow the road down the slope, and immediately check around the left-hand corner for a Laterite hidden in the rock. Hug the cliff edge and make your way around to a sitting spot, and then a Bone Statue containing another Laterite.
Now head to the centre of this area, where a Corrupted Statue lies waiting, surrounded by groups of explosive barrels to make your life easier. Activate the Trial, which consists of:
- 2x Brigands and 1x Headsman
- 2x Subjugated Sentries
With the two waves defeated, loot the Corrupted Statue for your first Tarstone of Mammon: the Enfeebling Stone. This one's actually pretty great alongside a fast-firing Sidearm like my favourite Forgotten Crossbow.
6. Conquer the Hag's Pit.
Head down the main path beside the Corrupted Statue, and you'll enter the battleground which lies in front of the Road To Absolution. Ignore the various enemies on the battlefield for the moment; just take an immediate left turn down the slope, and the path will wrap around to a cave entrance beneath the Corrupted Statue.
Head into the cave to access the Hag's Pit dungeon. At the bottom of the elevator, you'll see a Babka (like those in Mushroom Village) on a ledge above you. Walk forwards until the Babka jumps down to "ambush" you, and kill her.
Head forward until you're overlooking the room below, and rain fire down on the various Babkas below before jumping in to finish them off.
Inside this room you'll find 2x Laterite, and a chest at the base of the tree containing 1000x Coin and a Justiciar's Stone. But that's not all! Destroy the crates to the left of the tree to reveal another chest, containing 3x Burnt Effigies.
Now use the air current to head back up and exit the way you came.
7. Obtain the Foundry Stone.
Now is the time to systematically clear the entire battlefield ahead of you, killing every enemy you see. From the dungeon entrance, head to the far catapult in front of you and you'll find a 100x Coin Pouch. From there, I suggest you turn left first, and kill the Headsman and Brigands in this direction.
There's another Bone Gate here which you should ignore for now. Cross the first bridge and kill the next Brigand, but then head back for the moment. You'll return here after clearing the rest of the battlefield.
Now head to the right of that catapult with the Coin Pouch on it. This is the main entrance to the Road To Absolution bridge beyond, and it's guarded by an Armed Knave and six Brigands. That many enemies is enough to overwhelm you if you're not careful, so take your time and kite them around so you're dealing with just one at a time.
Behind them, to the left of the entrance to the Road To Absolution, there's a chest. Open it up to receive the Foundry Stone. It's been a while, but this is another item which you can take to Franz back at Marrow Keep to expand the Forge's capabilities.
Check the tree to your right for another 3x Weltcaps behind it. And that's that - you've conquered the battlefield.
8. Meet Vlas.
Head back to the far side, where you found the bridges leading down behind the wall. This time, cross both bridges. At the bottom, head straight ahead and up to the higher ledge in front of you. Here, you'll meet a new NPC named Vlas.
Exhaust Vlas's dialogue, and he'll tell you he's looking for his lost cat. Examine everything in the vicinity for some more dialogue from Vlas. Then examine the stack of crates opposite Vlas, and you'll find the cat, Mutton, inside the lower crate. Vlas will give you a Coin Of Mammon as a reward.
Make sure Vlas's remaining dialogue is exhausted, and then look behind him and destroy the Gloom Tentacle by the wall for around 600x Gloom.
9. Clear out the ruins to the east.
Just past Mutton's crate, on your right, there's a path to the west, but don't use it quite yet. On the opposite side, there are some ruins which it's worth investigating first.
Look around the tree opposite for 3x Weltcaps, and kill the Grisha Hunter that approaches you from the right. Then proceed down the slope and kill the other Grisha Hunter (an archer this time) at the entrance to the ruins.
Before you head through the doorway into the ruins, walk around the left-hand side. Around the corner you'll find a chest containing another Tarstone - the Headsman's Stone, which improves melee critical damage.
On the other side of the tree from the chest is another Grisha Hunter, lying in wait for you to appear below them. Turn the tables and kill them first. Then head back to the ruins entrance and walk through.
There's a slope to the left and a camp to your right. Approach the camp and kill the Netopyrs that drop from the trees above. Here you can loot a 100x Coin Pouch, and an Egon's Stone from the stone slab on the cliff edge.
Now head down the left-hand slope. Loot the 3x Weltcaps on the lip to your right, then continue all the way down to the Bone Gate at the bottom (again, don't use it). Check the right-hand corner around from the Bone Gate for another Weltcap.
Then turn around and follow the cliff edge all the way around the other way. At the end of the path, guarded by another Grisha Hunter, you'll find a Coin Of Mammon.
10. Head down the Road To Absolution.
Backtrack out of the ruins, and head left, to where you killed the first of the Grisha Hunters. In the corner by the wall, there's an air current. Use it; it'll catapult you up into the Road To Absolution, the long bridge leading out from the battlefield you cleared earlier. Only now, you're at the far end of the bridge.
Kill the two Brigands to your left, and steadfastly ignore the Bone Gate in front of you. Then turn around and fight your way back to the battlefield, killing the Brigands and the rolling Knight Of Mammon in your way.
11. Obtain the Makeshift Projectile.
Head back to Vlas, using either of the paths adjoining the Road To Absolution (or just by dropping off the side of the bridge straight into Vlas's camp).
This time, take that right-hand path at the foot of Vlas's camp, opposite the ruins. Drop down to the ledge below, and take the first left.
Upon this clifftop you'll find three Grisha Hunters. Kill them all, read the note on the floor if you wish, and then loot the curious ball on the ground to obtain the Makeshift Projectile.
Before you leave, you can also check around the far side of the rock to your left for another 3x Weltcaps.
12. Fire the Makeshift Projectile.
Head back down the slope, and kill the group of Wretches to the left of the bridge. Loot the Ventrium here, and then head in the opposite direction, killing all the Wretches to the right as well.
Turn right at the Bone Gate, and investigate around the rock for another 2x Weltcaps and a Gloom Tentacle.
Now - at long last - you have my permission to use a Bone Gate! Huzzah! Use the Bone Gate, and you'll find yourself back behind Ruk's statue, at the very first Bone Gate you found in the Outskirts Of Mammon.
Retrace your steps to the catapult beside Ruk's statue, and load the Makeshift Projectile into the catapult. The catapult will fire into the distance... And that's that. For now. You'll discover where it landed later on.
13. Give Franz the Foundry Stone.
You've now completely explored the Outskirts Of Mammon. But before we head across that last bridge to the west, return to the Outskirts Of Mammon Beacon and fast travel back to the Marrow Keep.
Aside from anything else you may wish to do during this pitstop back at base, head to Franz and hand over the Foundry Stone. This unlocks another facet of the Tarforge: you can now spend Gloom to completely reset the levelling of one of your weapons. Doing so will refund all of the resources you put into that weapon, allowing you to much more freely experiment with different weapon builds!
That's all for the Outskirts Of Mammon; now comes the more challenging region to the west, which paves our way to the game's fourth legacy dungeon. Join us in Part 18 for our Mortal Shell 2 Deserted Slums walkthrough.
