Maestros are enemies in Hollow Knight: Silksong. They are commanders of the Choir, able to summon Cogflies with their batons.[2]

Behaviour and Tactics

Maestros can be found alive and flying, or dormant, reanimated by Silk when Hornet approaches. They attack by commanding their Cogflies, and always try to have three of them nearby. Being flying enemies, Maestros attempt to keep aerial distance from Hornet, preferring to stay diagonally above her. They have three moves:

  • Summon Cogflies: Raises its baton and summons 1–3 Cogflies, depending on how many are missing. This move is always used if the Maestro has 0 Cogflies.
  • Command Swoop: Draws its baton back and then sweeps it outwards, commanding a Cogfly to swoop at Hornet. The Cogfly swoops down diagonally, skims across the ground, and swoops back to the Maestro once it passes behind Hornet.
  • Orbit: Moves a short distance forwards or backwards, commanding its Cogflies to revolve around it.

Maestros' Cogflies do not grant Silk when hit and do not drop organs for the Broodfeast or Runtfeast wishes. Additionally, hitting them does not grant focus for the Hunter Crest or spawn a Silk fragment after a Binding while the Reaper Crest is equipped, but triggers the special healing of the Beast Crest and Witch Crest. Upon a Maestro's death, any surviving Cogflies fly away and disappear.

While the Cogflies summoned by Maestros can be killed, doing so is futile, as the Maestro simply summons more. Maestros have no means of quickly defending the space below them, so attacking from beneath easily deals rapid damage. Silk Skills and Tools can also be useful for attacking them from a distance, as their biggest threat is contact damage.

Act 3

Black-threaded Maestros have their health doubled. They can gain any of the standard void attacks.
