The Last Taxi Walkthrough
The Last Taxi is one of the first available quests in Control Resonant where you explore a Threshold, bounded sub-dimensions that operate on an ever-so-slightly different spacetime than the main game. You’ll be solving a few simple puzzles to escape the first time you explore the Threshold, and then you’ll need to find it again to save another person trapped inside. Here’s how to complete The Last Taxi.
How to Complete The Last Taxi
You can actually start The Last Taxi in any of the locations where it spawns: for instance, the central portion of the Evacuation Zone east of Central, or the West Incursion Zone west of it. Of those two, the Evacuation Zone taxi is technically easier to find, as you don’t need any special abilities to reach it. There's a taxi in every zone, so starting this side story is simple.
The order you find the taxis in is thankfully unimportant, only that you complete the simple puzzles they require to leave the Threshold they take you to. It's also handy that you won't need to start each taxi puzzle over should you fail one step. However, the solution for each puzzle changes location after each failure, so you'll need to reorient yourself
Where to Find Each Taxi
There's a taxi to find in each of the zones in Control Resonant, none of them in obvious locations. The further you get into the game, the harder you'll need to look. Some are off the beaten path, some are almost hiding in plain sight, and others are deceptively close to the main story critical path. We'll be covering where to find each taxi, then, in its own section, show the solution to each of the puzzles you'll encounter as you enter the taxi Threshold.
Where to Find the Downtown Taxi
In a fun twist, you can actually reach the Downtown taxi until you've completed the Fault in the Evacuation Zone east of Central. You need the Reach ability to reach the eastern part of Downtown, which is otherwise blocked off by high walls.
There's a single elevator you can reach in northeast Downtown where you can use Reach and access the easternmost portion of the zone.
Once you get into eastern Downtown, head north. You're looking for a massive traffic jam. There are a number of abandoned taxis to choose from, but the one you're looking for is at the southern end of the group of cars. You'll know it by the flashing head and tail lights.
Where to Find the Central Taxi
You can find the taxi in Central is at the far northwestern part of the region. You can either reach it from the north by using Reach to get to the rooftops, or from the south down an alley guarded by mines.
It’s probably easier if you head straight west from the Field Office Fast Travel Door and keep an eye on the north side of the road. You’re looking for an alleyway filled with mines. You’ll find the taxi parked in a small lot by a dumpster.
Where to Find the Evacuation Zone Taxi
To reach the taxi in the Evacuation Zone, you’re headed for the east-central portion of the area. Start in the southern section of the map near the bright yellow entrance to the parking lot where you start the Urban Survival Side Story.
Head east from the parking lot entrance, and you’ll eventually come across a bright red alleyway rife with Hiss corruption. Go down, then turn east at the end of the alley.
You’ll need to dodge lasers and the spiked ground, but do so, and you’ll reach the taxi.
Where to Find the West Incursion Zone Taxi
The West Incursion Zone taxi is a little way south of where you fight that zone’s Resonant Entity boss. You’ll need to complete the Incursion Fault to unlock the Shift ability. Once you have that, you can start the hunt for the taxi.
Starting at the House of Mirrors theater, head north, and make your way on top of the buildings on the eastern side of the road.
Grab the House of Mirrors Fast Travel Door and jump across the huge gap leading further east. Once across the chasm, turn north and jump over to the rooftop on the western side of another long chasm.
Go to the end of the roof, jump across to the platform sticking out from the wall, then make a leap of faith toward the chair and tables “above” you.
You’ll need to quickly activate Shift to swap your gravity and reach the landing with the table and chairs.
Jump back onto the platform to the east, then follow the path around until you can see another platform across the large central gap toward the WAV graffiti.
Continue west, Shifting as necessary to progress. You’ll eventually reach a number of Hiss enemies frozen in place by some strange power.
Make your way east across the rooftops, then turn north when you pass a building with a “Seafood and Steak” sign.
You’ll see a white stone building on the other side of a gap. Jump onto it, then shift to the “wall” where the taxi sits.
Where to Find the Taxi in The Park
The taxi in The Park is on the upper levels of the parking garage in the northwest part of the zone.
You’ll know you’re in the right place by the two yellow-glowing entrances on the north side of the road. To actually reach the taxi, however, you need to go to the northern side of the lot.
The easiest way to get there is to drop into the yellow pit at the bottom of the parking garage and take the exit on its eastern side. You’ll end up on the northern road near the back entrance to the parking garage.
Head west at the top of the ramp, then turn south.
There’s a huge wall of Mold at the end of the road, but luckily you can climb up it onto the roof of the garage. Stop by the vendor if you like, and pick up the health upgrade item from the crate.
Then, you can jump into the pit on the south side of the roof.
The taxi is in north of where you can drop down, in an alcove flanked by Mold.
Where to Find the Underpass Taxi
You'll need to almost completely the Underpass storyline to reach the taxi there, as you need to have Dr. Grist take you on the cable car to the far eastern portion of the area.
When you do get to the eastern section, head past the Orientation Point into the yellow-lit, mold-filled room. Rather that proceed further beneath the area, look northeast across the room to a darkened corner.
You'll find the taxi waiting for you on the other side of the pillar in that far northeastern corner.
Where to Find the Unknown Taxi
To reach the taxi in the Unknown, you'll need to have planted enough of the probes during the Pope's Research side story to have access to the Patterened Evac Zone in the "southernmost" part of the zone.
There are two ways to get to that area. The first is to continue planting probes until you unlock the "southeastern" platform and the gravity well there. You can then simply fall to the Pattered Evac Building without much trouble.
You can also take a shortcut by going to the Factory Tower fast travel door, jumping down from the gravity well there, and using your traversal abilities to access a Reach point on the edge of the Patterned Evac Building platform.
Jump down from the Factory Tower gravity well and about halfway down, look toward the evac building. You can then jump, float, and dodge your way toward it. Go far enough and your point of gravity will shift, opening up the opportunity to use a Reach point on the edge of the road.
No matter how you reach the Patterned Evac Building zone, go to the "western" side of the area where the light pours in from behind the taxi.
How to Solve Each Taxi Puzzle
Like finding the taxis themselves, the puzzles you need to solve to escape each Threshold space can be relatively simple affairs or brain-teasingly clever. Here's how to solve each.
How to Solve the Downtown Taxi Puzzle
As usual, speak to Mila on the phone to get the taxi puzzle to spawn.
The trick this time is to pay attention to the taxi sign atop each vehicle. The taxi you need to ride in each section will have its top sign lit differently than the others, though what triggers the light to come on differs with each step.
For the first part of the puzzle, you're looking for the one taxi with its sign on. All the others will have it off.
In the second part of the puzzle, find one taxi with a top light that doesn't go off when you approach the car. All the others will have signs that dim when you get close. The taxi you want keeps its sign on.
To find the third taxi, keep all eight in view and approach one. The taxi you want to take will have its sign light up. None of the other seven will have their lights on.
How to Solve the Central Taxi Puzzle
Speak to Mila again, then return to the main street. This puzzle is two parts simple, one part brain-teaser. And it’s all about lights.
The first taxi you need to find is pretty obvious: it’s the only one with all of its lights on. The remaining five taxis will all be dark.
The second taxi you need to take is the only one with its rooftop “Taxi” light lit. Pick that one and you should get another green light from the traffic signal.
The third and final taxi you need to find is the one with both its head and taillights lit. The other seven will have on either their head to taillights, but not both.
Find the last taxi and you’ll be spit out back in Manhattan, seemingly no closer to finding Mila.
How to Solve the Evacuation Zone Taxi Puzzle
Before you can start solving the taxi puzzle, you need to speak to Mila on the pay phone north of where you arrive in the yellow-soaked Threshold space.
When you return to the main road, you’ll find several taxis there with blinking head and tail lights. To escape the Threshold space, you need to enter the correct taxi three times. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to tell which is the odd one out.
The first taxi you need to find blinks its lights whenever the other taxis have their lights off, and vice versa.
You’re looking for the taxi that blinks its head and tail lights twice, when the others only blink once. There’s no special order to things, though it might seem that way.
Find and enter the double blinking taxi and you should see two green lights on the traffic signal above the intersection.
For the second part of the puzzle, you need to find the taxi that doesn't blink its lights at all. The other seven taxis will all blink their lights a single time, but one will leave the lights off. Get in that one to leave the Threshold space and progress the quest.
How to Solve the West Incursion Zone Taxi Puzzle
After speaking to Mila on the phone again, return to the main intersection.
Of the four taxis there, only one will be under a blinking street light. That’s the one you want. The traffic signal should show one green light for your correct choice.
The second taxi you want is the one under the light that isn’t blinking. Hop in and you should see two green lights on the signal.
For the third and final taxi in question, all the lights will be blinking. The light above the taxi you want will be on when the others are off and vice versa.
Getting the third choice correct ends this particular portion of The Last Taxi and spits you back out in the larger game world.
How to Solve the Park Taxi Puzzle
The taxi puzzle you encounter from The Park is all about breaking mold and repairing cars. Start by speaking to Mila again, and decide whether you want to be truthful or not about her situation.
Return to the center street, and you’ll find one taxi missing its hood and trunk lid. You can find the hood inside the large Mold clump in the middle of the street. Pick it up and place it on the taxi.
The truck lid for the taxi in beneath one of the mold clumps to the south of the taxi: specifically the nearer one. Pick it up and place it on the trunk to unlock the taxi door so you can take your first ride.
The second taxi is missing a few more parts, namely the hood and two tires. And now there are miscolored parts you need to avoid, as well.
The first tire you need to find is right next to the taxi. Pick it up and place it, then continue searching for more parts.
The hood to the taxi is to the east, past the Mold bombs on the ground. Return it to its rightful place.
The second tire is at the end of the crosswalk across the street from the taxi. Place it and, if you’ve found everything else, you should be able to ride the taxi.[mold enemy]
The third taxi is complete buried in a Mold monster, which you can only defeat by breaking three of its outer nodes to keep them from healing the central one. Follow the low lines of Mold from the central node and kill the smaller enemies inside each outer node to make the central one vulnerable.
Once everything’s clear the parts you need to find will appear. The hood is near the newsstand just a bit northwest of the taxi.
The “taxi” light is just behind the taxi itself on a pile of blue Mold.
You can find the trunk lid a bit east of the taxi, sticking out of the Mold-covered streets.
Finally, you’ll need the bumper, which is southeast of the taxi, near a buried subway entrance. Attach it as with all the other pieces, then you can ride the taxi out of the Threshold again.
How to Solve the Underpass Taxi Puzzle
Flashing street lights are central to the taxi puzzle you'll encounter in the Underpass, and like the other puzzles, starts out simple and then plays with the rules laid down at the start.
The first solution is straightforward. Wait for the street lights to flicker and eventually turn off, and you want to enter only the taxi that keeps its lights on.
The second taxi you need to find is the exact opposite of the first. When the streetlights go out, only one taxi will have its own lights off.
The third and final taxi you need to hop in will have its lights off whenever the streetlights are on, and on when the streetlights are off.
How to Solve the Unknown Taxi Puzzle
The taxi puzzle in the Unknown is all about playing with light and shadow. As soon as you enter, you'll see one of the taxis lit by a powerful floodlight. Check out the shadow the taxis are casting.
To solve the first part of the puzzle, pick up the floodlight look at the two shadows. The taxi you want will have a taxi shadow. The others will have the shadows of other vehicles.
The remaining steps ask the same question, but with more possible choices. For the second, there are now shadows that look like cars, but remember a taxi has a sign on top. If the shadow doesn't have a sign, it's not the one you want.
The same is true of the third set of shadows. Pick up the floodlight and check the various vehicles' shadows. If the shadow is a taxi, you're good.
When you solve the last puzzle of the seven, you'll need to talk to Mila one more time before you can leave the the Threshold, but when you get back, nothing will seem to have changed. Dylan will call Zoe and report that he solved all the puzzles, and Mila could have found a way out. Neither is sure of her safety, especially with the city in the state it's in.
Worse, there is no reward for completing The Last Taxi as of the launch version of the game used in this guide. Whether one will become available or if this story is purposefully left dangling is unknown.
